I have a friend who’s gone through a hard year. He’s a believer, but a key relationship in his life dealt him a devastating blow. Heart wrenching betrayal and rejection have left him feeling weak and vulnerable. He admitted that his circumstances have caused him to doubt God’s love for him, and even to wonder if He even exists at all.

These kinds of life altering events can render us feeling so sad, we’re hardly able to function. They can include losses of jobs, material possessions, and relationships. Or medical diagnoses which radically change the course of our lives.

How do we muster our faith in times like these?

Mustering Our Faith

Muster–to assemble troops as for a battle, to gather, to summon, to rouse

Regularly, we have repeated opportunities to gather and summon our faith. Like working out in the gym, rousing our trust, when things aren’t smooth, builds muscle memory and strengthens our faith.

How do we muster our faith when we feel weak and God seems distant? Following are a few musts.

We Must Remember God’s Sovereignty

God is always in control. Nothing can thwart His purposes. He’s able to work all things together for His greater purposes. [1] Even the very hard situations we face are no surprise to God. His power transcends human sin, worldly corruption, and evil designs.

Joseph told his brothers that they had intended him harm, but God had used it for good, saving many lives. [2]

God used Jonah’s disobedience to elicit praise from the folks on the ship to Tarshish. [3]

The Jewish leaders’ evil plan to kill Jesus resulted in the salvation of humanity.

God has entrusted us with each circumstance we’re in and desires us to trust Him and not lean on our own understanding. [4]

We Must Orient Our Lives from God’s Greater Story

Paul tells believers that since Christ raised us up, we should set our minds on things above, not on earthly things. [5]

An eternal perspective reveals God working for our ultimate benefit. He’s working all things to conform us into the image of Christ, not for us to experience a smooth ride. [6] It’s vital for us to understand this. If not, we can view God as a distant dictator, out to destroy our hopes and dreams.

We need to live now with the end in mind. This life centers on emulating Christ, not mere temporary happiness. For we died and our lives are now hidden in Christ. [7]

We Must **Realize Being with God is Our Highest Joy**

The Bible has an overarching theme, woven into the fabric from Genesis to Revelation. God with us.

David confidently stated that the shadow of death could not make him afraid, as he believed in the presence of God with him. [8] He also wrote that in God’s presence, joy is full. [9]

After crying out to God concerning the unfairness of life, Asaph concluded that God’s nearness was his good, not his lot in life. [10]

While imprisoned in Rome, Paul urged us to rejoice in the Lord. Not just when we feel like it, but always. [11]

We Must Remember God’s Love for us Never Fails

No matter how often we fall short in actions and faith, God’s love for us never fails, it’s everlasting. [12] His lovingkindness never ceases. His mercies are new every morning. [13]

Before creation, God established us as His children. Nothing can separate us from His great love. We can describe His love for us as deeper, wider, longer than an ocean, and higher than the heavens. It surpasses our ability to comprehend. [16]

Challenge

What current challenges make you doubt God’s love or even His existence?

Talk to God about these things. That’s what David and other Psalmists did. If you journal, write them out. If not, talk to God about these things out loud. He wants us to bring our cares to Him.

The ‘musts’ above are not exhaustive, but they may help you muster your faith. Try them.

Prayer

Lord, we come to You now. You know the place we’re in. You’re not surprised by any of it. You’re with us and have allowed all things for our greater good. Help us not to doubt Your ways. May we draw near to You and walk in utter dependence upon You. You never intended us to face these things alone. We depend upon Your strength in our weakness. Amen.

And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2nd Corinthians 12:9-10 NASB)

Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10 NASB).

Good Friday – The Story of Us

A young man squatted in a dingy prison cell. His features were hidden by the deep shadows of his dark imprisonment. Only a thin plane of sunlight penetrated the darkness, revealing countless dust particles floating around rows of disheartened men. The man was seated, away from the light, staring, motionless, into the darkness.

Outside the prison, upon a hill, stood the place of execution, where condemned men were put to death. Today would be this man’s turn. In a way, death was a welcome ending to his pain. However, more strongly, the condemned man felt the fear of death’s mysteries. His soul, it seems, had died long ago, but the fear of physical death consumed every fiber of his being.

As he waited in the cruel anticipation of a violent death, his mind raced across the span of his life. What would have made a difference? What could have changed his inclinations towards evil? The answers to these questions could only be tossed out into his universe of despair. Like always, he knew no answers would come. There was no hope, never had there been hope.

Slowly and ever more increasingly, the young man became aware of the sounds of a great number of voices. There were shouts and roars, but none of the words could be recognized. The sounds increased and erupted past him like a huge ocean wave. An enormous mass of shouting people had passed just outside his cell and were proceeding toward execution hill. The time was near. The man could not remember so great a crowd ever gathered to witness a death before.

Just then, the outside door of the prison was slammed open hard against the wall. Keys jiggled and the main security door was unlocked. Prison guards streamed towards his cell. The hopeless man trembled and recoiled in fear. Death was pouncing upon him.

The guards unlocked his cell and converged upon him like many wild tigers. They seized him, and drug him out into the morning sunlight outside the prison. When they had cleared the outside door of the prison, he was slammed face down hard on the ground. The impact knocked him into a daze. In a semi unconscious state, he waited for the first slapping sting of the lashing whip.

After a while, he senses quickened and he slowly opened his eyes, spitting dust from his mouth. He tilted his head slowly, expecting his flesh to be ripped open at any moment.

Amazingly, he was alone.

People were flowing in masses towards execution hill, but he was left unattended on the ground.

Slowly at first, but with increasing urgency, the freed man got up and made his way into a block building, across the block from the prison. Looking around as he fled, he expected his fantasy to end at any moment. He made it to the dwelling and flung himself sobbing to the ground.

After a long while, the man’s curiosity couldn’t be contained. He left the building and circled around the back of execution hill. He came up upon the crowd and mixed himself safely among the masses. With much effort, he fought his way through until he could see what the commotion was all about.

Three men hung dying on crosses, the pain etched across their faces. Two of the men he knew from his time in prison, but he didn’t recognize the man in the middle. This man seemed much weaker and closer to death than the others. He stood watching the dying man with blood gushing down the wood of the middle tree. A strange magnetism drew his soul, locking him in on the suffering criminal.

Their eyes met. Though he was among a mass of people, the man on the middle cross was looking directly at him. The dying man’s eyes were not desperate and frantic, but peaceful and loving.

After a few moments the freed man turned and walked away. As he fought his way back through the crowd, he overheard someone asking about the man on the middle cross, “Why are they killing him, what has he done?”

“He’s done nothing wrong,” the answer came. “He’s dying in place of a man set free.”

Exchanged Life

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2nd Corinthians 5:21 NASB)

What would it feel like to find yourself in a prison cell, sentenced to die? Yet, being released at the last hour for another to die in your place. A man free of wrong, willing to die for you. This is our story.

Prayer

O Lord, as we approach the celebration of Your resurrection day, we pause to fully appreciate Your obedient cruel death on a Roman cross to reconcile us to eternal nearness to You. We can’t live a perfect life, but You did and were willing to die in our place. Thank You.

We pray for those in our lives who are close to us and far from You. May their hearts and minds be enlightened by Your love. May they come to saving knowledge by believing in You.

I pray these things in the powerful name of Jesus, the Christ.

Amen.

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, ²fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. ³For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart (Hebrews 12:1-3 NASB)

Abiding, Practicing the Presence of God

(In the Moments) Hey Pop

I love exploring the woods behind the house with our grandkids. Though we live close to civilization, our unique neighborhood feels like the mountains of North Carolina. All the lots have at least 2 acres with wells and septic tanks. Quite magical.

A few years ago, I took our, then two-year-old grandson, Nicholas to the barn to see our baby chicks. On the way down the hill to the barnyard, as I was holding his hand, he looked up, found my face and said, “Hey Pop.”

This took me a bit by surprise. ‘Hey’ is what we typically say to someone when we initially see them. But Nicholas was acknowledging our continuing togetherness. In a true childlike moment, he was savoring our nearness.

Fast forward a few years to a couple of weeks ago. I was with both Nicholas and his brother Zachary (who is two years old and just now finding his words). We were hanging out at their house while their parents were on a date. While reading a book to Zachary, he looked up, found my face and said, “Hey Pop.”

This was such a pleasant surprise. Like Nicholas, he was acknowledging our nearness, as we enjoyed a book about dinosaurs.

Nearness

A few of us at our church are encouraging each other in practicing the Lord’s nearness throughout the day. We’ve read books like Union with Christ [1] and Practicing His Presence [2]. God indwells His saints by His Holy Spirit. We’ve been raised with Christ and seated with Him in heavenly places. [3] The Lord is always closer than breath. Everything exists because of Him. He holds all things together. [4] We’re learning from saints, like Brother Lawrence and Frank Lauchbach, the rhythm of being mindful of the Lord’s near throughout the day, even as we’re engaged in our temporal activities.

I’m learning to find great joy when He comes to mind. Even after long stretches, when the day’s endeavors have occupied my thinking, I celebrate His nearness and refuse to feel shame for not acknowledging His nearness more often.

We’re learning to be ever mindful of His presence, thanking Him, depending on Him, and asking for His guidance at every turn.

Hey Lord

A couple of days after Zachary said, “Hey Pop,” I was at work teaching a class. During a break, heading down the hall for some coffee, I thought, “Hey Lord.”

It took me by surprise, like my grandson’s acknowledgment of our togetherness. It was a simple expression of the Lord’s nearness.

Since then, I’ve frequently thought, “Hey Lord”. Sometimes it stops there. Other times the reminder He’s with me leads to prayers of praise and asking for His help with what I’m doing. “Hey Lord” has become a beautifully simple step in acknowledging the Lord’s nearness and practicing His presence.

Become Like Children

To me, it’s easier to love and appreciate childlikeness as a grandfather. When I’m with my grandkids, I find myself feeling childlike and playful. It takes me back decades to when I was a child and could enjoy the moments of life more fully and took the time to play.

Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3b NASB)

But Jesus said, “Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14 NASB).

My grandsons are teaching me to pause often and appreciate the relationships the Lord has given me, especially my relationship with Him.

Challenge

Where are you spiritually? Even if you don’t consider yourself a spiritual person, you are on a journey. We will all die one day. No one gets out of here alive. As my old pastor said to us, when he found out he had terminal cancer, “I’m a dying man speaking to dying people.”

As believers, we know that, for us, eternal life has begun. We’re indwelt by the Living God, designed to live through us. Abiding in His nearness, remaining in His love, yielding to His Spirit, is not just a nice way to live, it’s the normal Christian life.

Celebrate God’s nearness right now and throughout the day. Allow Him to live His life through you. Only as we abide in Him are we able to live lives of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control [5].

Prayer

Hey Lord. Thank You so much for allowing me to learn from my grandson’s childlike hearts. If they are so excited about my nearness, how much more should I be excited about You and Your nearness. You indwell me and empower my every word and need. Please stop me quickly when I go off on my own and don’t wait for You.

I want my life to be lived for You and You alone.

A Greater Hope, Joy in the Midst

(In the Moments) No Lose Situation (Even with Cancer)

According to Wikipedia, game theory defines “no win” as a scenario where every outcome is disadvantageous to all players. How about the game called life? Most of us have experienced a time when we feel completely cornered and trapped. A step in any direction seems detrimental, producing feelings of hopelessness.

Chris’ Cancer

Consider my friend Chris. A successful business executive with a loving wife and two God honoring sons, he found out in February 2015 that he has brain cancer. This news devastated us all. You hear about folks dealing with cancer, but when it happens to your family, it hits home. I say “family” because Chris is my brother in Christ. We’re both adopted sons of the Lord Most High, bought and paid for by the precious blood of Jesus. We’re brothers on the same commission: to live and speak the love and grace of Christ to everyone God brings our way.

Long before the cancer, loving like Jesus has been Chris’ heart. His multiple trips to India ignited his love for its people. So much so, he and his wife, Sharon, moved their whole family to an apartment complex, where many of his Indian business associates lived. Chris did it to be near them. He taught them to swim and loved them in ways the Holy Spirit directed him.

We Can’t Lose

Though the news of his cancer was certainly devastating, Chris and Sharon have clung close to each other and trusted God in the midst. Amazingly, Chris sees this whole situation as giving him a unique platform to continue his commission. Chris is a walking example of someone who sees God as his good, no matter what circumstance he faces. Chris is a vessel of the Lord’s joy, and his life speaks of God’s nearness, infusing courage to others daily.

He shared with me that the dire spiritual conditions of some of his family are far tougher for him than dealing with cancer. Chris knows where he’s going and his faith in the truths of his future centers him and gives him eternal hope. He’s ready to see Jesus, but he knows some of his family members are not.

With conviction, he recently told me we Christians are in a ‘no-lose situation’. As adopted children of the King, given the Holy Spirit as a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance [1], our lives on this earth are our journeys home. We know how our story ends. We literally cannot lose. This brings joy inexpressible and full of glory.

Chris’ life reminds me of the following verses: “Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (II Corinthians 4:16-18 NASB)

Challenge

What ‘no-win situation’ do you feel you’re in right now? Do you feel trapped, like no move could get you out? If Chris focused on his cancer, he might feel this way. And maybe he did for a while. But Chris has ongoing conversations with his Savior. He and Sharon share a deepened faith and intimacy. Christ is Chris’ life.

What’s your situation? Bring it to the Lord. Consider this a chance to entrust yourself further to God. Embrace God’s higher purpose for your life, a greater story which is about Him conforming you into being more like Jesus.

If you don’t know Jesus, He invites you into His fellowship. When you do, you too will know how your story ends, no matter what you face at this moment.

Prayer

Lord, I must confess, I’m not where Chris is with such a frightening word as cancer. But you’ve given me courage through my own difficulties, because I know You’re near. You’ve grown my faith because You’ve used really hard things for me to learn that I can’t, and You can.

Please continue to grow my faith through all the days You’ve numbered for me. Keep me aware of Your nearness and keep me from running ahead of You.

Like Chris, may I use the platform You’ve given me to tell what wonderful things You’ve done for me and how You’ve shown me mercy.

May my days be filled with love for You and for those You bring my way. Guard me from ever choosing any worldly pleasure above you.

You are my King, my Highest Joy.

My life pales compared to knowing You. I give all of me to You, Lord Jesus. You are my life. [2]

Amen

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21 NASB).

Epilogue

After seven years of fighting the good fight with much courage, Chris completed his journey here on earth in 2022. He used his platform to proclaim the goodness of God to so many. Knowing Chris deeply touched my life. I will see him again.

(In the Moments) When Things Get Really Hard

A few years ago, I lost my little sister. Although we noticed increasing signs, her rapid death still surprised us. She literally worked the same week she died.

Her loss has been harder for me than the death of my parents ten years earlier.

Even though she was my only sister, I would tell her she was my favorite. Truly, she was the best sister anyone could ask for. I can’t think of an argument we ever had during her entire life. Except once when she disapproved of the girl I was dating.

Being the two oldest, we were foxhole buddies during the divorce of our parents. She was always there.

Her death is allowing me to access unshed tears from years gone by. For the first time, I’m learning to grieve.

Days after her death, I cried out to the Lord in my journal, not knowing how to process my concern for her eternal state and the huge, gaping hole in my heart. I asked Him if He wanted to say anything to me.

In my spirit, I sensed Him say, “I am enough.”

No matter how sad I am and how much I grieve, God is enough. He is with me. I call out to Him, especially in my pain. He is and always will be my El Shaddai, my All-Sufficient One.

Since then, as I travel this path of grief, I’m knowing God in a deeper way. It seems the greater my pain, the greater His sufficiency.

What I’m Learning

There’s great value in:

Knowing the love of God.
Knowing the Holy Spirit indwells us to empower us and guide our ways.
Knowing we were raised with Christ and given an eternal perspective.
Knowing God alone is our Highest Joy.
Knowing that loving like Jesus fills our lives with joy.

Rocks of Stability

Nearness

Because God is with me, I don’t fear, though the shadow of death doesn’t leave me.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me (Psalm 23:4a NASB).

Comfort

God is always available to provide abundant comfort in all my afflictions.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ (II Corinthians 1:3-5 NASB).

Peace and Courage

Jesus tells me not to be surprised by troubles. They will come. But in Him, I find peace and the courage to endure. These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world (John 16:33 NASB).

In my toughest times, I receive courage because God will never leave or forsake me.

Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified nor dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9b NASB).

The Greater Story

Jesus tells me that He came to give me abundant life.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10 NASB).

But is abundant life the same thing as happy, smooth circumstances? Or is it the abundance of Christ’s nearness, like Rivers of Living Water, welling up from within?

God wants more for me than a better life. When Paul tells us God is working all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes, he’s referring to something better than good circumstances. God’s purpose for me is to give me the freedom and joy of being conformed into the image of Christ.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:28-29 NASB).

There are profoundly sanctifying forces at work when I cling to Jesus in my pain. Trials loosen my grip on lesser loves, freeing me to fully enjoy Jesus.

Conclusion

Life is hard. We face troubles. What’s important is how we respond.

Do we keep ongoing, striving best we can, ignoring what we’re going through?

Do we dedicate ourselves to many false affections which temporarily numb the pain?

Do we curl up in a fetal position and shut life out?

Or do we recognize that what we’re going through is no surprise to God? Our God of all comfort is an ever-present help in our afflictions. He is near to our broken hearts. God can use our pain in marvelous ways we would have never perceived. Like a master surgeon, God is at work to free us and to allow us to fully enjoy Him.

Prayer

Lord, I don’t grieve well. I don’t know how. I’m sorry for the many times I’ve minimized my pain because I didn’t know what to do with it. But You’re showing me that living with You in my pain gives me an opportunity to know You in uniquely deeper ways.

Thank You for the great comfort I receive in Your nearness, especially as I suffer loss.

Please guide my grief of my sister. I miss her so much. Thank You that You are enough, even now.

Amen.

(In the Moments) On the Fifth Day, God Created Dog

A few years ago, I went upstairs before my wife and Koosh, our little Shih Apso (Shih Tzo and Lhasa Apso combination), insisted on going with me. I turned the lights out and Koosh curled up close on the pillow beside me. After a while, I heard him on the floor dancing around, so I opened the door and let him out, thinking he wanted to go downstairs. I shut my eyes and, in what seemed like a moment later, opened them to find Koosh right beside me again. It was a bit of a mystery. Didn’t I let him out? I thought, but then drifted back to sleep.

I wondered, later on, if my wife had opened the bedroom door and allowed him back in.

“Yes. He was whining and scratching on the door,” she said. “He wanted to be with you.”

Koosh would often curl up in the chair beside me, glancing my way from time to time to be sure I was still there.

As I watched him, it occurred to me one day that God created so many things for us to enjoy, from magnificent ocean sunsets, brilliantly fragrant roses, dark coffee and succulent chocolate pie. We see aspects of His creativity everywhere we look, but when he created dog, He gave us real companionship and a picture of His heart.

How Can we Recognize God when we’re with our Dogs?

Like God, our dog delights to be with us

Like God, mistakes we make don’t change our dog’s opinion of us

Like God, our dog loves us in ways we don’t understand

Like God, our dog protects us (even from the walkers in front of our house)

Like God, our dog connects with us without words

Whenever I would grab my car keys to go somewhere, Koosh would always look up to see if he was going to be invited. One of his favorite things to do was to stick his face out the window as we drove along, lapping up all the sights and smells on the road.

He would do the same thing when my wife and I got ready to take a walk. If we picked up his leash, he knew he’d be going too and he’d tremble with excitement. Walks allowed him to be with us and to savor the riches of mailboxes and blades of grass.

What can we Learn from our Dogs?

Like our dog, we can learn to fully embrace each moment

Like our dog, we can learn not to worry about our next meal, but to trust our Provider

Like our dog, we can learn to be joyous about the simple pleasures of life

Like our dog, we can learn unwavering, long-lasting loyalty

Like our dog, we can learn to snuggle close to those we love

Just like our dog, we should always be eager to have fun and take advantage of opportunities to play.

Challenge

Be a student of your dog.

Watch them as they try to sneak into your car as you’re leaving. Notice how their eyes drop at the sight of your suitcase. Appreciate the gusto of their wild “kisses” when you return from a vacation.

As they jump in your lap when you open the car door, forget your perceived failures and bask in their unconditional love.

Even though you may think you don’t deserve it, realize they’re wagging their tail just because you’re you.

When you’re sitting by the fire and your dog jumps in your lap and follows you from room to room, realize that God wants to be with you even more than your dog does.

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.” (Zephaniah 3:17 NASB)

Prayer

Lord, we thank you so much for Your creation. You have given us so many things to enjoy. Your presence brings us genuine joy. Thank You for giving us a splendid picture of Your love and Your delight in us when you gave us dogs. Help us appreciate the aspects of Your love we see in our dog’s heart.

And may we learn and apply so many characteristics of You we see in our dogs.

Amen.

Epilogue

Our faithful friend, Koosh, passed away a few years ago.

Our new buddy is Jack, an Australian Shepherd puppy. He’s now a year and four months old. Bred to herd, he’s quite different than Koosh in many ways, but not in the ways described above.

Jack is a challenge, but we love him so. My wife was captivated by his eyes, and we got him last year when he was just a few weeks old.

Aussie’s need plenty of exercise. That’s our biggest challenge. If Jack gets bored, he’ll open our Amazon packages before we can get to them.

Waiting on Jesus

(In the Moments) The Joy of Waiting

Stepping back can seem like quitting but think of it as waiting for another. I’m not usually good at it. When we’re taking a walk or shopping, my bride tells me she loves my butt, but would prefer not to be looking at it when we should be together. This slows me down and I take her hand. The point is being with her, not finishing the walk or checking shopping off our list.

Walking with my wife is about savoring our moments together. It’s also that way when I’m with God. Problems and duties give me various opportunities to walk with God and to wait on His timing. When I forge ahead on my own, I’m missing out on being with the Source of joy. I’m also detached from the Source of Life, who guides and empowers my life.

Why I Step Ahead

I’m realizing that I step ahead because I don’t really trust God is in control of certain situations. It’s a terrible idea to try fixing life on my own terms, but I still do it. God is at work in all situations to conform me into the image if Christ. [1] Though I may not like His methods, stepping ahead doesn’t save time. It prolongs the process.

I also step ahead because I’m compelled to accomplish. My sense of self-worth seems linked to my perceived success. This is exhausting, especially when I take on things God never intended me to do. The result is futility. Apart from God’s life working in me, what I do has no eternal worth. [2]

I’m a slow learner with this one. How quickly I convince myself that this or that is a good thing and forge ahead. I’ve worn myself out doing what seems good, instead of waiting on God’s best for me.

These actions are doubly harmful because when I don’t wait on God and the empowerment of His Holy Spirit, I operate in my power instead. So, not waiting on God causes me to wear myself out doing things which have no real value.

Nobody has time for that.

Waiting Starts with acknowledging Weakness

After Paul repeatedly spoke to the Lord about his weakness, the Lord responded, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” [3]

His response, “Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. So, I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, catastrophes, persecutions, and in pressures, because of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (II Corinthians 12:9b-10 CSB)

What I’m realizing is that waiting often depends upon the value I place in my weaknesses. If I truly believe my weakness is good, which is often hard to admit, God’s power can be perfected in my weaknesses.

This is by far the best route to take.

My weaknesses remind me to wait for God’s direction and power.

In the Waiting

Waiting is the best. If I trust Him, God promises to guide me. God is at work. In His timing, He’ll show me when and how to join Him along the way. If I’ll wait, He’ll show me.

In the waiting, I learn to trust in His control, His love, His strength. Stepping back is making way for another. Stepping back is waiting for Him to initiate and allowing His power from the vine to produce true fruit in my life.

In the waiting, I’m with God, digging deeper into His love, basking in the joy of His presence, depending on His glorious power.

Being with God really is what it’s all about. I don’t want to miss out on the most important thing by stepping ahead without Him.

Challenge

Is there a situation in your life where you’re waiting for God? Most of us have several. Perhaps you’ve already inserted yourself to no avail. You may have even made matters worse.

It’s okay. God’s mercies are new every morning. He can use even our bad choices for His ultimate plan to make us more like Jesus.

Step back. Wait now.

Waiting is hard but take courage. He is with us in the waiting.

Prayer

Lord, I’m sorry for moving ahead of You. I see now how utterly futile it is. Please keep me from rushing ahead. Please build my trust. You’re in complete control of every situation and You will show me my part. I open my heart to understanding Your great love for me. I look forward to the marvelous adventures which await in my communion with You as I wait.

(Peace, Hope, and Joy), God's Greater Story

(In the Moments) Embracing God’s Presence in Daily Life

It’s been a battle this week to stay on higher ground. My prayer is to set my mind on things above and orient my life around God’s greater purposes to conform me into the image of His Son. But lately, my heart’s been more invested in my circumstances and how my life’s going.

When this happens, I lose perspective and go into survival mode. I have little regard for others and am more concerned with how I’m doing. I wrote the following in my journal:

As I got off work today, my mood was sinking. It lingered as I dropped by Publix on the way home. The cashier, named Gage, was super joyous in his conversations. Normally, this is how I feel, but my gloominess was a stark contrast to his exuberance.

As I hurriedly transferred the items from my cart to the revolving rubber surface for Gage to scan, I really had no concern for him. I was thinking only of me. I wanted to be left alone in my self-pity. Gage’s kind words roused me, revealing my joyless, self-centered state.

In recent years, I might have doubled down in self-effort, wearing myself out trying to slay each hindrance to my happiness. But I’ve learned from the challenging trials of the past few years that joy is not tied to life’s ups and downs.

God, in His severe mercy, is peeling away my vice grip on worldly happiness and redirected my heart towards Him. Through circumstances I would have never chosen, I’m realizing my total completeness is in Christ. I can’t count on anything to control my feelings of well-being and fulfill my deepest longings, but Him.

The interaction with Gage reminded me I’d lost sight of this life-changing truth during my day-to-day grind.

Recalibrating my Heart

Asking God to recalibrate my heart. I got alone and read Romans 15 from our church’s reading plan. These words opened my eyes to eternal things:

Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, build him up. For even Christ did not please Himself; (Romans 15:2-3b CSB)

It struck me how Christ, as our example, didn’t come to please Himself. He demonstrated a sacrificial love throughout His time on earth, culminating in washing the disciples’ feet (even Peter and Judas) and dying a brutal death for us.

In contrast, I couldn’t take my eyes off of myself to live outwardly.

And I read:

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13 NASB)

What a blessing! As I draw near, I’m filled with ALL joy and peace, abounding in Hope, empowered by His indwelling Holy Spirit.

These words fill me with Hope. Even when the battles before my eyes drain me and cause me to lose sight, God is with me. No matter what I face, He is my peace, my joy and my lasting Hope.

God’s Loves Through People

Looking back on my interaction with Gage, I realize something I often miss. I’m not sure if Gage is a believer in Jesus Christ or not. If I’d had a better perspective, I might have asked. But what I’m struck with now is how often God brings us people to keep us aware of His love.

Challenge

Chances are you’ve had a day like I just described. It might even be today. When this happens, get alone with God ASAP. Some days getting alone may be harder than others, but even a fifteen-minute break can be golden in God’s timing.

Be honest with how you feel. I highly recommend journaling. David did this, and his heart often changed while he was writing.

Grab hold of the truth God reveals and orient the rest of your day and the rest of your life (as possible) around His greater story. He’s about us becoming more like Jesus, not our comfort. [1]

Stay alert to the Lord’s presence and the gifts (like Gage) He might bring along the way. If you’re too concerned with you, you’ll easily miss God’s presence all around you.

Prayer

Lord, gloominess and difficulties cause me to long for You all the more. When I seek You in my self-centered day, Your splendor explodes into brilliant peace, joy and hope within. Please keep me focused on You. I appreciate Gage waking me to this higher reality, whether he realized it or not. May I see every event in life as an opportunity to do the next right thing, to speak Your words and serve in Your strength. May I live life fully from You and for You; all for Your glory.

A Firm Anchor for our Soul, Being okay in spite of great pain

(In the Moments) How do we Keep Our Disappointments from Turning into Daily Discouragements?

I have a friend who’s enduring a host of medical problems. They’ve been through a procedure which left them with an irritating, painful reminder of their difficulties. Sometimes the symptoms can cause isolation and loneliness. They’re trying to fight, but sometimes the pain is overwhelming. Physical and emotional pain can rule the day. And who can blame them?

My friend’s situation is only one of countless examples of life not turning out as we’ve planned. Is anyone immune to the disappointments of life’s circumstances?

Chronic disease, estranged relationships, divorce, lost jobs, financial disasters, loss of property, death. These unwelcomed “guests” spring upon us and threaten to capture our hearts. How do we prepare for such pain?

God, Are You Listening?

Believing our welfare depends on our circumstances can drive us away from God, making matters far worse than any temporal difficulty.

In Psalm 73, Asaph writes about how his life has gone “wrong”. Focused on his circumstances, he was bitter. He saw wicked folks having good times. They prospered, ate all they wanted and lived lives free of trouble. It just wasn’t fair. Was he wasting his time trying to be holy? Was God even noticing his efforts? Was He listening to his cries? If God had cared for him, surely his life would have turned out better.

Then Asaph came into the sanctuary of God. [1] He entered the Lord’s presence. This gave him a glimpse of God’s greater story. God changed his heart. A better life, he learned, depends not on his situation, but his connection to God.

After this eternal gaze, Asaph wrote to God, Nevertheless I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand. With your council You will guide me, And afterwards receive me to glory. (Psalm 73:23-24 NASB)

‘Nevertheless’ is such a significant word. It encompasses all our past pains and disappointments and brings us into this very moment. Regardless of it all, right now, we’re okay because God is with us. He takes hold of our right hand and leads us moment by moment. And when our temporal story is done, He receives us into His glory.

The Eternal Shift

Asaph may have needed to be reminded of God’s eternal work on his soul again the very next day. I know I need continual reminders. The temporal world is real. It’s where we live. The present reality is not diminished by the existence of a bigger story.

Read carefully Asaph’s conclusions and mark them in your soul. Come back to them often. Live in these truths.

Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth (Psalm 73:25 NASB).

But as far me, the nearness of God is my good (Psalm 73:28 NASB);

Asaph realized that nothing in heaven or on earth could complete him but God. Being with God became his better life.

Embracing eternal truth, even during life’s disappointments, allows us to continually connect to God’s greater story for our lives.

Don’t Miss the Blessings

Concerning my friend overwhelmed by pain, I’ll quote, by permission, a challenge another friend gave them.

“If you read the Bible, it’s full of people suffering. God never promised a life free of suffering, but He did promise He’ll be there through our suffering. Our choice is to accept this or not. Remember, we’re not in heaven yet. Don’t miss out on the blessings around you due to your pain.”

Embracing God’s greater story frees us from the arduous task of trying to keep our circumstances happy. Paul calls us to orient our lives around things above [2] and to set our affections on God’s greater purpose of summing up all things in Christ. [3] God doesn’t just rescue us from hell. He desires to make us whole by leading us to completeness in Christ. [4]

God wants far more for us than smooth circumstances. He doesn’t want our feelings of well-being to be anchored to something we can lose. My friend Dave Andes says, “Believe me, God isn’t committed to your comfort.”

Challenge

Reflect upon an event or situation that profoundly hurts. There may be some choices yet in your control concerning the situation. Make the next right choice.

But, even if this pain never ends, you’re okay because God is our Ever-Present Help in times of trouble. [5]

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace.

Prayer

Lord, I rest now because nothing is a surprise to You. You have my best interest in mind no matter what very hard circumstance comes my way. Please forgive me for the times I’ve “required” my life to go smoothly for me to be okay. I’m seeing more and more clearly every day that I’m eternally okay because of You and You alone.

These present difficulties are not even worthy of comparing to the glories You have in store for Your children. In fact, there’re less than nothing compared to being with You, and in Your love forever. [6]

When I walk in the reality of this truth; this greater story in which You are the author, my joy overflows. When I stray from this true reality, please correct my heart quickly I pray.

I love You Lord.

I’m feeling undone. I’m overwhelmed. The pains and cares of life seek to pull me under. Heart ache, people I love hurting, brokenness surrounds me. I feel detached from my Prince of Peace, my Life, my Glory, my Hope, my Source of Joy, the Lifter of my Head.

It’s close to midnight, but I decide to take a prayer walk. In times like this, I turn to prayer walks and getaways as my way of pulling back from everything to be alone with God.

I don’t always remember to surrender my troubles to God. Far too often I forget that apart from Him I can do nothing. [1] I forge ahead in my strength, striving to fix my life, leaving carnage all around. Relying on me instead of God is always a bad choice.

Leaving my driveway, I turn left, ascending towards Highway 6. I pry my grubby fingers off of each angst and deliver them one by one to my Father. I think of Peter’s words when he tells us to cast our anxiety upon God because He cares for us. [2]

Sometimes I can forget God is trustworthy. He has my best interest in mind. With my words, I release every care to my Good Father. Turning my palms upward, I peer into the cloudless, starry night.

I cross the highway and enter a dead-end road, which completes my walk out.

I hear a sound. Four deer, who were grazing in an open field, scamper away. God’s creation is all around. A small, wooded cul-de-sac boomerangs me back toward home.

As much as it’s in my ability to do so, I’ve surrendered all my burdens. As I cross the highway again, I sense peace. The problems seem overshadowed by the Lord’s nearness.

I ponder the marvels of being God’s son. A verse comes to mind.

Complete in Christ

For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete [filled to the brim, fully accomplished, perfect], and He is the head over all rule and authority; (Colossians 2:9-10).

In the verse, Paul says I’m complete in Christ. In Him, I’m rendered perfect in every conceivable way. I’m filled to the brim and overflowing with Christ, needing nothing.

The imagery is stunning.

As I descend the hill toward home, I marvel at the ramifications of this truth. If He’s filled me, what else do I really need? Do I need people to respect me and honor me? Do I need earthly security? Do I need smooth circumstances? As I ask, I know the answer.

If I’m filled to overflowing with Jesus, which I am, only one concern remains: loving others as He’s loved me. All the pressure’s off. Jesus lives in me. As I yield, as I abide, He loves through me. This is my only concern. He’s taken off my plate the need to always be looking after me.

As John the Baptist said, “I must decrease, and He must increase.” (John 3:30)

Walking it Out

I know this is not the end of my journey with tough feelings. If God blesses me with more days, I’ll face more physical and emotional pain. People I love will lose jobs, suffer illnesses, and face broken relationships. I’ll continue to experience my own trials.

Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 6:33 NIV)

Jesus has overcome the world. I’m in union with Him. He’s in me and I’m in Him. In Christ, I’m forgiven, loved, accomplished, righteous, valued. I’m complete in every way.

Walking out from here involves remembering Christ’s nearness and completeness, no matter what I face and no matter how I feel.

Challenge

What do you need to surrender unto the Lord’s care this moment? In what areas do you feel lacking?

Call out to Christ and ask Him to give you an awareness of your completeness in Him. Walk in it. Experience the freedom of being filled to the brim with Him.

Rest in Christ and His undying lovingkindness toward you. He is your all.

Take a prayer walk.

Prayer

Lord, what an amazing realization. Releasing my cares to You, I’m aware of Your nearness and my completeness in You. Please help me not to take back those angsts I’ve delivered to You. My completeness comes from You.

Empower me to worship You, Rest in You, depend upon You and love like You.

Amen.
